It comes from oils secreted by plants during dry spells, which seep into the soil and rocks. When rain falls, it releases these oils along with a compound called geosmin, produced by soil bacteria. Our noses are incredibly sensitive to geosmin—even in tiny amounts—so we instantly detect it. Some scientists think our ancestors evolved this sensitivity as a survival tool, helping them find fresh water. The next time you step outside after a storm, you’re actually smelling ancient plant and microbial chemistry at work.</p>
