It isn’t perfectly clear the way modern glass is. It’s slightly wavy, with bubbles trapped inside. Someone lifts it toward the light, turning it to inspect it. For a moment, the faint ghost of a face stares back from the surface. Most early glassmakers were more interested in bottles and windows than in reflections. But at some point, someone noticed that when a piece of glass sat against a darker surface the reflection became stronger. The background stopped light from passing through and bounced more of it back. As glass became smoother, artisans began experimenting with metals, eventually coating glass with thin layers of tin and mercury. </p>
